Notes on yesterday's individual presentations )

Yesterday we had a privacy lecture.  It touched on Sonar CRM http://www.trampolinesystems.com/products/sonar-crm

Individual information sources that people covered was:
Hope those links all worked :)

Example of data from blog frequency analysis )

Further to my previous post, here is the data presented in a weird reverse graph which I put together.
Blog_analysis_file
This blog is better then the previous web 2.0 library mashups one I was reading as it was more about promoting the book.  This one has a little bit of that, but is more general in purpose.

**This post is also a test of me using posterous' tag by email functionality.

Example of Mashups post I could do + Initial thoughts after reading blog posts headings.

One of my concerns with choosing this blog, after reading the book was to the level of skill required to make sense of what is been written.  Conceptually it was easy enough to understand, but in terms of actually doing something, with my current skill set, it is at about this level.

This is an example of the book cover that I did not read, we have the other cover here in Australia.

This podcast will be worth listening to, it might be another way to get into the topic.

A Google Maps Mashup with PHP/MySQL might be something I might be getting closer to attempting based on some of my reading in ISYS2065 Relational Databases and Design I have been doing over the last week or so.

A lot of posts on the blog about various book signings :)

Yahoo! Pipes International is something that we are covering in week 6 of the ISYS2356 KM Tech web 2 adventure.

Microsoft shuts down PopFly <- this is an example of why you might read this blog, they are keeping on top of various services that are mentioned in the book.

I added myself to their Library Mashups book fan page on Facebook page.

Their are 4 pages of posts with 6 pages of posts per page.  The first post was in March 2009 and 17 months have elapsed since then.  Consequently, the frequency of posts can be calculated at 1.4 posts / month (24 divided by 17).  The last three post dates of August 4, 2010
July 27, 2010, and June 21, 2010 would seem to confirm this.  Is that enough data?

One final thought, a lot of the map related information seems to be adapted from similar concepts as taught on Google Maps Mania, of which I am a long time reader.  So picking another topic may be worth while, so as to maximise the learning opportunity, but before deciding, I need to complete the actions that I have stated I would above.

My thoughts after reading the Library Mashup Book

First impression was that it was a little more technical then I originally thought ie a lot of coding examples in it.  This resulted in a post decision remorse of whether I had made the right decision in choosing this new blog.  However, I am going to stick with it and see what happens.  The other couple of observations that I had were:
  1. Librarything.com seems to get a lot more attention in library circles.  I had dabbled with Shelfari and Goodreads.  This morning I set up my own account.  You can view my library thing account here http://www.librarything.com/profile/cameronstewart and my library thing catalogue here http://www.librarything.com/catalog/cameronstewart
  2. I was reading this book (in physical form) on the tram on the 112 tram and next to me sat down a lady reading on the ipad.  This prompted me to tweet:
sitting on the tram on the way in this morning I was reading a (physical book) on webtech. A lady sat next to me reading tweets on her ipad Source:

I chuckled as I could see the irony, reading a technology related book on a non technological new form.

Reviewing subject guide -> working out what my communication channel assignment is about

  • Depending on which specific communication channel – blog, listserv, wiki, ejournal, discussion group etc – you are allocated, you will need to observe (or participate in) the professional conversations, view the research activities, investigate postings, or follow up related or linked material.
  • You will document what happens in the selected communication channel and also make appropriate connections with information and knowledge management concerns and your own professional needs.
  • You will demonstrate the ability to compile and write a report using an appropriate report structure.
  • You will also demonstrate the ability to give a brief individual oral presentation about what you have learnt to the rest of the class
How I respond to these dot points:
  • The communication channel I have chosen is a blog.  The process I will probably uses is to review past blog posts and get up to speed with the project.  This website also sells a book, which I have borrowed from RMIT library.

If I have had stayed with my original choice, although there has been no recent posts, there may infact be enough content in the links that are provided.
  • How this blog fits is in really a editorial kind of blog (at least the ones tagged Communication Channel Assignment (Individual) ) which will probably focus less on original content / research, but more on "discussing professional conversations, view the research activities, investigate postings, or follow up related or linked material."
  • The final report and presentation will probably not be done using this blog, but rather it provides supporting materials / workings out / dead ends etc (ie an experience blog)
  • In terms of the presentation to the class at the end, this will probably mention this blog as further reading, and also the hash tag #ISYS2441

This is my replacment workspace for my Google Librarian Central Blog assignment.

I couldn't put my hand on this assignment yesterday, but this was the original blog (1 post strong) that I put my work on http://cameron-stewart.livejournal.com/.  We are encouraged to use different blogging platforms here at RMIT.  I quite like the posterous platformes because:

  1. It supports post by email, I don't have time to log into all these different CMS
  2. It is quick to add in Google Analytics code to track visitors, no need to muck around with html
  3. I don't need to worry about how the blog looks initially (although I can muck around with this later.)  It helps me focus on just producing content.

The other thing that I have do is change my blog + Library Search Trends

I originally selected http://librariancentral.blogspot.com/ but judging by this it hasn't been updated since July 11, 2008 9:28 AM -> so it looks like a bit of a dead duck!  I had a bit of a look around and the associated google group hasn't taken off either.  I have changed to http://mashups.web2learning.net as it also coincides with week 6 in my Web 2.0 adventure I am doing for the Knowledge Management Technologies subject.  Trying to synergise where ever possible.

An interesting question still remains, as to why the Google Library ceased to exist.  A quick visit to Google Trends reveals a downward trend (ie reducing demand)...interesting.  I estimate that it is almost a 50% reduction in the past 6 years.  Perhaps this is because libraries haven't been leading.

I thought I would also look at the comparison between knowledge management and information management.  This time well over 50% however the volume of searches is much less.
