Learning About Wiki's Wiki

I have invited you to share a Google Site:

Learning About Wiki's Wiki
https://sites.google.com/site/isys2441/

Here is a link (and access to edit) our second wiki. Not sure if this is the right strategy but like the fact the blog tool on this allows more indepth posts then wikispaces.

2nd Group Wiki, Structural Changes on ikermit.wikispaces.com & Final Report Update

Hi Guys,

I have done a bit more work on the wiki.  Here are the key things I have achieved:
  1. Setup a 2nd wiki (experimental) with a focus on the project.  The url is https://sites.google.com/site/isys2441 Mwiuch of the content on this site I have adapted from the template that came with the site.  It is branded RMIT (ie internal project usage.)
  2. Moved any assignment type of posts from ikermit.wikispaces to this new wiki eg Assignment Specifications, Readings etc which our client - Redmond Libraries (and their staff who read the wiki) wont need to see.
  3. I have deleted / renamed relevant pages on the ikermit.wikispaces.  I took a pdf backup of each page before I did this, I will reupload these tomorrow < net crawling at my place tonight.
  4. Jason, I have also moved the mission statement section into our final google doc report < you should all be able to access this.
  5. I have also setup templates for the Presentation and Individual Reflection sections < I've just sent through access to a group folder invitation so you have access to these.
Hope that is ok so far, feedback encouraged.

Hi guys,

I want to share a google doc with you.  I think from memory you need a gmail
account to edit the doc (not @student.rmit.edu.au or @hotmail.com)

Is this right?

Agreed, Cameron.
Let's get rid of it. We all have access to it via the Blackboard.

Assignment 2 < Update from Cameron for Reference Later / Use in the final report

HI Guys,

Here is what I have to add / reiterate from yesterday.  Apologies for not uploading any direct content over the holidays, I was monitoring the RSS feed from our wiki, but it didn't seem to be working properly (ie no updates came through so I just assumed that nothing had been posted).  Good work to you guys for keeping this moving.  Here is an update from my end.

Networking and looking for a client

I have attended Melbourne Knowledge Management Leadership Forum a couple of times.  At the events I have met a guy called Stuart French (DeltaKnowledge on twitter).  He has implemented several wikis in corporate environments so I thought it appropriate to send him an email for advice and to see if he knew of anywhere that needed a wiki to be written.  Here is the thread http://docs.google.com/View?id=dg3pd37m_1777htr678cm and he suggest that we should aim to have something done every 2-3 days to get some traction on the project.

Here is also a link to wiki related articles on his blog < some good stuff in there, could probably reference at least one article from there.

Suitability of WikiSpaces Platform
I am not totally confortable with the presentation of the wiki as it stands.  I also had a look around at other alternatives.  This is a great article that I came across (will be useful to use when referencing)

I did some further digging around and the Jotspot platform that is mentioned is no longer, it was bought by Google and has been rebranded as part of their Google Sites package.  I set up a couple of other wikis that I set up that may be of use if we want to change platforms.
https://sites.google.com/site/isys2441/ - one of the advantages in this platform is that you can easily add in analytics so you get information as to how the wiki is being used.

Note:  These sites are blank sites, I haven't added in any content yet.

KM Tech Web 2.0 Adventure
I have uploaded a reference copy of Web2.0 adventure that we have just done in KMTech this semester.  I think the Google Wave section may have been added since when you guys did it < worth visiting.  The document also has links to classmates blogs.
One idea that I shared with Terri-Lyn is that we could write weeks 7-12 training of the Web 2.0 Adventure for our wiki?

If we were to go that way, there is also a good podcast I found from San Jose University on itunesU (Itunes University).  Sue has mentioned these guys a couple of times in lectures as this is the worlds biggest / best information management university. If you login into itunes store, there is a tab called ItunesU.  If you search for a podcast LIBR 246-06: Information Technology Tools and Applications you should find it.  They review about 50 of these Web2.0 tools in there < many covered the same as in RMIT's web 2.0 adventure, but many other ones as well.  These even have PDF transcripts so it would be relatively easily to use and reference some of this content on our wiki.

An aside Its also interesting that if you visit their website's home page, they have a couple of events scheduled in the next few days.
Isys2441_wiki_san_jose_univers

So it is obviously topical :)  It might be worth keeping an eye out as they may post video / audio / slides from the presentation.

RMIT blackboard training wiki

This is another idea that I have.  We could do a training wiki for RMIT staff and student using Blackboard.  I'm not sure if you are up on the news, but blackboard is getting upgraded later on this year http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=rb2er63u88kw.  I also picked up a WebCT(which I think got bought out by Blackboard) training manual that the university was throwing out in the holidays.  I could digitise this to use as a basis for the structuring the content on this wiki.

Next Meeting:

We'll meet next week in the class room in the hour between the Lecture and Tute.  Terri Lyn has apologised for next week.

Hope you all have a good weekend :)

Hi Jason,

The sites that you linked to have a good structure, in that they have one topic per week. I think that this will be an effective way for us to set up our training wiki. Also, we may be able to use some of the content for our wiki.

The idea of having our organisation be a library is an ideal one, especially considering the training we are wanting to instruct on.

Have a happy weekend.

PBworks Quick Start -- Day 6 of 7 - Put multimedia on your workspace!

PBworks
Check out more amazing tools your can embed into your workspace -- polls, google gadgets and more!

Advanced Multimedia Tools

Hi there,

This is day 6 of our 7-day series. Today, we'll cover using multimedia in your workspace.

Video, audio, and chat rooms, oh my!
You can insert all kinds of multimedia applications on your workspace with just a few clicks. Let's insert a sample video:

1. Upload your video to Teachertube.com
2. Copy the embed code of your video
3. Go to your workspace http://rmit.pbworks.com
4. While editing, click "Insert Plugin" and choose the "Teacher Tube" plugin. Paste your embed code and save your page.

Inserting images
Inserting images is easy: While editing a page, use the "Insert Links" box on the right side of the page.

Other popular plugins:

  • The HTML/Java scrip plugin lets you insert tools from around the web, like Animoto, Voice Thread and more.
  • Chat rooms let your students or staff communicate with each other. This is a great additional way for you and your students to collaborate.
Learn more about the many plugins that you can use on your workspace

Remember, all of this is free with your PBworks.

Try it out today by editing a page: Log in at my.pbworks.com and chose rmit.

Thanks!

PBworks Quick Start -- Day 5 of 7 - Create private pages

PBworks
Check out more amazing ideas for your workspace!
Advanced Multimedia Tools
Hi again,

Welcome to day 5 of our 7-day series. Now that you know how to track your students work, I'm going to share how to create private pages and lock your pages from others on your workspace. These are premium features.

Hideable pages allow you to create private content on your workspace - this is great if you are developing a syllabus or group project on the workspace, but aren't yet ready to share it with your class.

Lockable pages let you place information on your workspace, and lock it from future edits. Use this to post assignments that you don't want your students to edit.

How to Hide and Lock pages

1. Log in to your workspace at my.pbworks.com and chose rmit.
2. Look to the right-had side of your workspace there are three options:

  • Put this page in a folder
  • Add Tags
  • Page Security
3. Chose Page Security
4. Chose to Hide or Lock your page.

View a video demonstration on how to create hidden and locked pages.

Tomorrow we will discuss how to add multimedia on your workspace.

Thanks!

Kristine
